Every year, Americans celebrate the 4th of July with picnics, parades and fireworks. Safe Kids West Michigan reminds families that fireworks can be dangerous, causing serious burns and injuries, as well as increased fire risks. For a firework free 4th of July, the Michigan DNR offer alternative camping locations. 

  • 9,100 people go to the Emergency Room with fireworks-related injuries in the month around the July 4th holiday.
  • 500 Emergency Department treated injuries involved sparklers. 1,000 involved firecrackers and 200 involved bottle rockets. 
  • 62% of all fireworks-related injuries occur in the month around July 4. 
  • 100%  of all fireworks-related fatalities involved reloadable aerial mortars in 2018.
